Our Dreams & Self Expression

Have you ever had a dream, and, knew that's exactly what it was while you were still asleep? This is called lucid dreaming. It can and does happen sporadically to some people during the REM period of sleep. The following is the definition of the word "lucid", from the Merriam Webster Dictionary...
Main Entry: lu·cid
Pronunciation: 'lü-s&d
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin lucidus, from lucere
1 a : suffused with light : LUMINOUS b : TRANSLUCENT 2 : having full use of one's faculties : SANE 3 : clear to the understanding : INTELLIGIBLE synonym see CLEAR
I have had a few spontaneous lucid dreams. I am told that some people can actually learn to control their dreams to the point of directing the characters, placement, and, even the endings. Having conscious control over your dreams can provide you with many helpful situations in your daily life, such as controling fears, learning new skills, etc. It's probably fun too! The most important thing in acquiring this type of dreaming is to have good memory of your dreams. It is helpful to record dreams as soon as you awaken. It is helpful to wake naturally. It is helpful to get more sleep than usual while you are trying to improve your lucid dreaming. Telling your self that you will remember and be able to control your dreams, before going to sleep may also provide some added benefits. My main problem with this would have to be the alarm clock. Most of us must use them, at least, some of the time, in order to get to work, appointments, and, other things on time. It might be a good idea to go to bed earlier than usual in order to get more sleep. I believe lucid dreaming to be the only conscious, or semi conscious form of dreaming there is. it has been said that we use only ten percent of the capacity of our mind. This is because, the other ninty percent is subconscious.
This ninety percent is the part which normally dreams. The conscious and subconscious mind communicate through dreams. The subconscious part of our mind is not easily inhibited by our senses. Therefore, that part of the mind can freely accept multi dimensional concepts. If you have a recurring dream, chances are, you're ignoring a particular signal that some thing in your waking life needs your attention. An example of this would be a dream of constantly being in water which is fairly deep. This would generally show you that you are too booged down with some things in your daily routine and would benefit from slowing down some. A similar example is the person who consistently dreams they are floating on the water. This person generally has a good sense of well being, as though they are simply gliding through life itself with the grace of a prima ballerina.
Most schools of thought on this topic will argue between the physiological and the psychological theories. I tend to believe that both play a part in the dreaming process. We are all familiar with the concept that the foods we eat, relatively close to bedtime can cause us to have more or less dreams, and, also cause to have certain types of dreams. I'm sure we have all experienced this from time to time. One such incident with myself was when I ate 3-4 hotdogs with pickles on them within an hour or 2 of retiring for the noght. The results were... not only a rough time sleeping, but, constant dreaming of senseless things! This is a good example of the physiological point of view. Those who follow the more common train of thought with psychological theories are obviously correct, as well. Often, upon retiring for the day, we have on our minds, nimerous unfinished tascs of the previous 8-10 hours, problems that have yet to besolved, lessons we have learned, etc., not ot mention, concerns related to our future. The next day is often the last thing we think of when we are falling asleep. If you intend to use dreams to work out specific problems in your daily life, it is a good idea to go over the previous day's issues, or the particular situation in which you desire change or insight, just before going off to sleep.
Some people assume that, because they don't remember their dreams, they don't dream. Everyone dreams. Even your pets dream. As a matter of fact, everything dreams during the REM period of sleep...even insects. REM accounts for about twenty to thirty percent of our sleep time. Since the average person spends one third of their life sleeping, the average person would spend between one ninth to one tenth of their life dreaming. Persons who are deprived the necessary amount of dream time will almost definitely present behavior and personality disorders... anything from crankiness to seizures to mental illness.
Nightmares are generally due to anxieties and fears and are acccompanied by profuse sweating an/or heart palpitations. More than likely, you have a deep seated fear related to the dream, and, should try to find out more about it during your conscious hours, as you will then be able to assume some sort of control over it, or, at the very least, be aware of what fear exists, and, possibly seek counseling. These nightmares are not known to be caused by watching scary movies or discussing fearful topics, although, as stated previously, psychologically, you will be more likely to have a nightmare afterward, especially if you already have a fear of the particular thing which ocurred in the movie or topic of discussion.
Symbols are often a major part of the fream world. By envisioning a window in a dream, it may mean that you are not able to join into a particular activity, but, only able to view it. A person you dream about may not mean that person has anything to do with the subject of the dream, but the character of the person may play the part of the symbol instead. Being as everyone has their own unique set of traits, symbols vary from one individual to another. It is helpful to remember other details of the dream in order to decipher the symbols. Try keeping a journal of your dreams. If you awake in the middle of your seven to nine hours of sleep, write down any details you have in mind before returning to sleep. Also, upon waing for the day ahead, is the perfect time to write in your journal, as, you are more likely to remember the last dream you had before waking. Once you have gotten to full consciousness, take a look at your logs and make any changes or add ons you can think of.
Paranormal dreaming is described throughout God's Word. Some call this prophetic dreaming. For a very interesting study, go to Audio Bible's search area and type in the word "dream". As you can see, dreaming can be a way of communication between Spirit and souls. Paranormal dreaming can and does ocurr to this point in time, although, according to The Word, all prophesy has been written. Ecclesiastes 1:9 (King James Version).......and there is no new thing under the sun. This does not mean we cannot still have those prophetic dreams, only that, other's have already written about them.
All things considered, the most common dream involves one's self and how we relate to the world around us. Our ideals, ethics, prejudices, and, overall personality will play a large part in defining what these dreams mean to us individually, what type of dream they are, and, how they might help in our self improvement or ridding ourselves of unwanted behaviors or fears. Truth is more acceptable to the subconscious. Use this to your advantage and you will find numerous ways to creatively solve problems and overcome difficulties in your daily life. Who knows?, You may even begin to help other's with their inhibitions as well!
Just for fun, Tickle has a dream test you can take which they claim will tell you what your recurring dreams tell about you and your personality. Have fun, and, have a great day...or night! Dream on.................
I love to research and study... mostly The Word, but many other subjects as well. While I don't always agree with oppinions and comments made by authors, I still consider most any reading material to be of value. No matter what you read, you have a mind of your own to decide what's most likely to be truths and what are almost definitely falsities. The thing is that, often, the two are mingled within the same written text. I am not saying that I agree with all the material I read and some of it is pretty far out. That can be a good thing too though, especially if you're up for some entertainment.
Here's a link to a free e-book download called Dream Psychology. Freud, researched the dream life for years as have many others. Even if some of the content is myth, dreams and their meanings will probably remain one of the most researched and yet, least understood subjects of all times. As I say of so many other articles, " It's all in fun ".

Some of the Greatest Optical Illusions

The picture above comes from the same site as most of the other links you will find here and has been in circulation for God only knows how long. I believe it was one of the first ones that made optical illusions so popular for their fun amusing qualities. This one, below, from the same site, is a bit less known and one of my favorites because it really has a great deal to do with psychology and left and right brained thinking and all that other fun interesting stuff I love. :)

Here are the links to a few others from the same site :

I am the Mekong River

I am not the author of the short you are about to read. This, amog many other free essays, etc. can be faound at E Cheat. I found it inspiring as I hope you will also. God said that nature itself cries out for His return. When reading something like this we can certainly understand why.

I am the Mekong River
From my humble beginnings in an ice cave high in the Tibetan Himalayans, I wind 2,600 miles
through remarkable years of history. I am known by Asian peoples as the "holy river."
I have seen war and hunger. I will now tell of who I am and who I know.
I am the tenth largest river in the world. My course runs through China, Laos, Thailand,
Cambodia, Vietnam, and on to the South China Sea. I provide life-giving resources for
countless people and wildlife. My history is long and diverse. Early man inhabited my
banks using my waters for nourishment. From the fifth to the eight-century primarily the
Tai inhabited me. By the 13th century the Tai people occupied most of the my valley and
grew from my waters with their staple food of rice. The Tai eventually formed a country,
Thailand. As for foreign explorers, I was not "discovered" (by western standards) until
1886. It was difficult to navigate my waters because of my pesky Knong Waterfalls. In
1886 six Frenchmen were trying to establish a trade route. Finally they realized my
falls were unbearable so they built a railway across the falls.
During the 10th century, however, the Vietnamese began noticing how well the Kingdom of
Champa was doing with my rich waters and soils. After all, I am considered to be one of
the world’s richest rivers in terms of mineral laden sediments. I give all the water for
irrigation not only the rice fields along my course, but also many fruits and vegetables.
Currently I provide well over half of all the rice grown in Vietnam. Sediments from me
provide food for one of the worlds most diverse fisheries. So it is no wonder that
Vietnam began to want a piece of me. Here is where the years of anguish started. I would
no longer be the carefree peaceful waters I was in past history. Humans began to
complicate everything. The Vietnamese captured the Champa capitol, and destroyed the
magnificent capitol over the Mekong delta. This was only the beginning of many wars
and violence I would be witness to. In 1953 the French battled with Vietnam to take
control of my middle and Lower River. In 1957 the U.N. started development to control
flooding. Flooding my natural life cycle…they had no idea what they had put in motion.
They meant well, but… In 1963 the Vietnam War began. We will not even get into that. It
is an entire history of its own, but I will say I grieved beyond words that this occurred
on and around my shores.
Worse for my fate now is what humans have done, and are planning to do to my freedom.
Annual flooding supports a biologically diverse ecosystem not only for me, but also for
the plants and wildlife. Now there are damns all along my course. In the 1960’s a series
of hydroelectric damns stopped my free course. Thailand is now faced with terrible
problems such as deforestation, destruction of wildlife, urban development and water
scarcity. They now want to build another dam on me, further altering my course, and
stealing my water. Thank goodness there have been environmentalists protesting on my
behalf speaking up as to the impact this will have. But for most, their very lives depend
on paddies created by levies and damns. Twenty new damns on my course are already planned.
The flooding that these cause would displace millions. The sediment that I carry with my
waters is now trapped behind the dams and now cannot enrich my banks. Last, there are
already fewer fish in me because they are trapped and do not have a free course. Some
may become extinct.
I am one that is beginning to become damaged beyond repair. I am the river that wants to
flow but is trapped behind a concrete gate. I have witnessed things long forgotten.
Be aware of what has happened and what is happening. I am the Mekong River.
